The portable classrooms in high school had the worst heating and cooling systems
It’s no secret among my family that I didn’t like going to school as a kid.
It started in first grade when I was bullied for having glasses.
Nowadays I doubt that would even cross the mind of the average six year old, but in the early 1990s this was a common insult among children. I hate the taunting and wanted nothing but to stay at home and never go back to face the unending scrutiny. When I got to second grade, I finally started to fall into a group of friends and felt comfortable for a change. This all came to a crash when I left this school for junior high in the sixth grade. Suddenly the bullying and teasing returned, especially during gym classes in the locker room around other boys. My glasses were a constant source of scorn, for whatever reason. Then when I got to high school, they were in the process of building the new campus so I spent two of my four years in portable classrooms. They’re like a studio apartment trailer home, but wide and long enough to teach a class inside. One of the worst parts of being in portable classrooms were the terrible heating and cooling systems inside. The furnaces were woefully ill equipped for our cold temperatures during January and February every year, and then the terrible air conditioners couldn’t handle the summer heat. I was relieved when the high school campus finally opened for classes when I was a junior. It wasn’t ideal, but I got two years of proper HVAC systems in high school.
