Updating residential HVAC for the first time

To say my wife’s mom is stubborn would be like saying soccer comes with some running.

In fact, all you do in soccer is run unless you’re the goalie.

And my mother in law is sure no goalie. She is the sort who has lived life on her terms and her terms alone. I grew up in a city. My family had a three bedroom apartment and I shared a room with my brother. We weren’t rich but we also had all we needed. And when it came to heating in that apartment, we had more than we could handle. That apartment came with radiant heating that was either on or off. There was no in between. So we had to learn to perfectly crack windows in strategic locations all winter. My wife, on the other hand, grew up in a very rural area. She had no modern residential HVAC at all. They heated their small home with a wood stove through the winter. But like us, there was no air conditioning and just fans for cooling in the summer. My wife and I met at college and have now been together for more than 25 years. Recently, we had to coax her mother into letting us introduce some modern HVAC technology into her home. She’s still fiercely independent but has slowed down physically in a significant way. The wood stove, while still providing plenty of heating, is no longer practical. Luckily, we got her to see the light and she let us get the HVAC professionals out there to install a pair of ductless heat pumps. Now she has quality heating and air at her fingertips.
