Visiting the HVAC business for an assignment

Our first assignment for our environmental class when I joined college two years ago was to visit any business and find out what products they were selling were climate-friendly.

I’d heard my mom discuss with the HVAC serviceman how the electric heat pump needed to be popularized not only for its energy efficiency but also for how climate-friendly it is. That’s why I decided to visit the heating business and learn more about the electric heating system and how it works as a better option. I knew that the HVAC professional would be too busy to have time to reply to all my questions, so I planned to do it by scheduling a heater maintenance visit at home. I’m lucky we live in the same area as my college so I can do two things simultaneously. We use an electric heater at home, so my questions revolved around understanding why it was considered a climate-friendly heating device. Our heater was okay, but the only thing that needed to be done was changing our disposable HEPA filter. The other components, including the wireless thermostat, were still working efficiently. I knew that was the likely scenario, but I needed to do my assignment using the heater as my focus which I explained to the heating technician. Lucky for me, the HVAC supplier runs a customer education program, so I was slotted in to ask all the questions I’d want to ask. That’s how I learned that electric heating equipment is less carbon-intensive, which is how it gets the consideration for being climate-friendly. The main issue with gas furnaces and boilers is that they mostly use fossil fuels. My final presentation featured additional components, including the wireless thermostat and how it makes the heat pump more efficient in saving energy.
